Scarf-borough Fair

‘Tis the season for scarves in silk, muslin, chambray – all textiles soft and flowy. But what’s the right way to tie them? Whether you tie an ascot wrap or western wrap around your neck; or wear one as a belt or around your ponytail; there is no wrong way to wear a scarf. We do believe, however, that the Clipper would look mighty fine accessorized with one around the head. Enjoy the Spring season and be creative.

The Hill-side, selvedge chambray. Symmetry Goods, Dixon (scarf that becomes a tote bag). Our Legacy, Red Paisley. Apolis, linen bandana. Creep Clothing, orange plaid creased scarf.

In light of a great bands farewell, we wanted to post a little something. We love a lot of LCD Soundsystem videos. It was Disco Infiltrator that taught me: when in doubt on the dance floor – use more arms. I saw Movement and knew that these guys were trouble. But Dougal Wilson’s Tribulations was the one that restored faith in music videos in general.

One take, interaction with multiple screens… This kind of thing is so fun, and done here at its best. Thanks LCD. You were never afraid of the white Jeans.

Movies Of 1984

I have long held 1984 as the “best year.” I remember how good it felt saying it was 1984. I remember how awesome my O.P. socks felt, and corduroy shorts looked. No evidence however, is more convincing of the year’s prowess than a simple list of movies from its 12 month period.

It’d be outstanding even if Breakin’ and its sequel hadn’t been released in the same year.

ed. In addition: Max Headroom made his first appearance in 1984, and When Doves Cry was a #1 hit. The Olympics were in Los Angeles, and I was wearing a beret a lot of the time.

We invited artist & friend, Michael John Kelly to make a Launderette inspired mix for us. He decided to make two. Here’s what he has to say about Volume 1 – Party Anthems:

“I’ve been nostalgia’ing pretty hard lately. For a purer time in music. You had to dig for good records. Read zines from out of state. Word of mouth was analog. You had to take a chance and go to a mystery show.
I daydream about how amazing it would have been to have gone to all those shows with my wife had we known each other. That life could not be sweeter.
I just had much better taste then than I have these past ten years. We all did.
Our jeans were silly, but we were punk”

A pretty good description of what you’re gonna get. Try something new kids. You won’t be disappointed.

Gypsies

Patrick Cariou spends a decade migrating backwards through the thousand year journey of the gypsy people. Starting in Western Europe, through Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and finally to India, Cariou visually documents the varied images of these renegade, survivalist clans. A very authentic, life’s work; a beautiful and an important study of a misunderstood heritage.

Remembering A Giant

Paul’s tribute to Liz

Her violet eyes and deep décolletage. Her onyx waves of hair and thick arched brows. Her saucy portrayal of Maggie in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and as petulant daughter of a rancher, Leslie, in Giant. This is how Launderette chooses to remember Elizabeth Taylor.

Things fall apart.

Phil Harder has shot most of Duluth band, Low’s, videos over the years. Over The Ocean has always been our favorite. The music is calm & beautiful, you’re slightly worried about someone getting beaned by a toaster, Zak Sally’s wearing the hell outta that watch… It all seems appropriate to share this overcast Monday morning. We love towards the end when guitarist, Alan, glances up as if he’s felt it start to rain. Here’s to everyone staying dry today.

The new Low album, “C’mon” drops (we had to, right?) – April 12, 2011. Snuggle up with the new single if you haven’t already:

Try To Sleep – Low (mp3)

Magnetic Tape

Certain songs only sound right on tape. Your association of them to a time and place leaves them lacking when heard any other way. In A Big CountryLove Cats should sound muddy, with an appropriate amount of hiss underneath. Perhaps now an aesthetic more than a medium, cassettes made music portable, and we gave our lives a soundtrack.

Project C-90 understood this – the residue of magic this abandoned format left behind. An incredible catalog of photos, the Russian based Project C-90 has compiled a comprehensive archive of blank tape images. Every brand, 60 minutes or 90, metal and chrome.
