Some may know John Hillcoat as the director of the movie The Road, (I missed that one in the theaters, no hard feelings John, it’s in my queue). For me he’s always been the Brit behind Nick Cave’s video for “15ft of Pure White Snow.”

We find ourselves in a cold war. Eastern block decay threatening a stand off with desaturated film and shimmering guitars. Between Green-Corduroy-Suit’s moves (yes, it’s Jarvis Cocker), and the companies combined choice in footwear, this is one communist party we want to join.

Nerd Boyfriend is one of the most handsome, most brilliant websites we’ve ever come across. It is a word-less blog featuring photos of suitably attired men matched with the clothing and accessories to achieve the look. The extensive “nerd boyfriend” directory ranges from the fictional to the iconic, from Marty McFly to Bob Dylan. The site’s ability to find such dead-on matches to the photographs is an impressive feat; what a worthwhile use of someone’s web-rarian skills. Some of our favorite Nerd Boyfriends featured on the site include: Buster Keaton, The Specials, and Michael Keaton as Mr. Mom.

The above photograph of James Joyce is classic and we would’ve loved to see him sport the Monte Carlo.

Japanese magazines are way better than ours. Part catalog, part style guide, all Kanji.

The latest issue of Japan’s Free & Easy is all about boots, bikes, and cameras. You don’t even have to be a casual reader of ours to know how that appeals to Launderette.  An amazing archive of American men’s fashion, Free & Easy magazine covers characterizations and impressions. James Dean, Surfers, Motorcycles, Workwear… it is another cultures interpretation of our own, and the irony is how much you learn not understanding a word.

If you can find it, it’s not cheap, but nowhere else will you find better reference for leather jackets, desert boots, and dog breeds.

Lauren Child, author of the Charlie and Lola children’s books, has illustrated a wonderful edition of the classic, Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. Lauren’s whimsical, floral fabric collages are such a natural fit for Astrid’s outlandish and playful heroine. Many girls have looked up to Pippi with wonder, so Launderette put together a style guide for the woman with her adventurous spirit.

Gonna go out on a limb saying it, but a leather Oxford is one of summer’s sexiest shoes. Not always the first you think to dig out when the weather warms, oxfords are not only timeless but seasonless. The right pair goes with everything. Jeans and dresses and shorts – take on whole new looks when tights and socks are left behind in temperate climes.
