Beyond Dance
When style is taken to a new place, beyond the expected aesthetics, it can illicit a visceral reaction. “Amelia” performed by La La La Human Steps encompasses impeccable style in each included art form: dance, film, music, fashion, architecture. Watching this, nothing but opposites fill my head: simple yet complex, delicate and strong, modern but classic. At Launderette we fancy we are these things, but within context of this performance that feels delusional.
We love design that uses negative space, that is architectural, and singular. “Amelia” is a kind of kinetic design. Watching it, as the dancers are pulled into suspension physically, the viewer is suspended emotionally. Mistaya Hemingway’s beautiful face and facial expressions are poetic in themselves. We have the utmost respect for anyone that can make things that are so hard, look so easy.
In case you were wondering, the music is The Velvet Underground’s “Waiting For The Man” readapted by David Lang with Nadine Medawar. Is the dance about addiction? About codependency? Interpret it in your own way, but its beauty unarguable.
